How many UFO high bay LED lights are needed for your space?
To calculate the number of UFO high bay LED lights needed in your space, follow these steps:
- Dimensions of the Space
First of all, calculate the area’s length, width, and height in meters or feet to determine the number of UFO LED lights.
Calculate the total area by this formula:
Area = length (L) × width (W)
- Purpose of the Space
Different places require different brightness levels. The brightness level is measured in lumens per square meter (lux) or foot-candles.
A few areas with their brightness levels:
- Warehouses: 150–300 lux
- Workshops/Factories: 300–500 lux
- Retail Spaces: 500–800 lux
- Gymnasiums: 300–500 lux
- Calculate the Total Lumen Requirement
To calculate the total lumen required for your space, use this formula:
Total Lumens Required = Area (sq. meters) × Lux Level
Example: For a 100 sq. meter space that needs 300 lux:
Total Lumens Required = 100 × 300 = 30,000 lumens required.
- Determine Lumens Per Fixture
You should check the lumen output of the UFO high bay LED light used in your area. For example, a 150W UFO high bay light produces 22,000 lumens.
- Determine the number of fixtures
To determine the number of light fixtures, use this formula:
Number of Fixtures = Total Lumens Required / Lumens Per Fixture
Example: If the space needs 30,000 lumens and each light provides 22,000 lumens, then calculate the number of fixtures by dividing the total lumen by the lumen per fixture.
Number of Fixtures = 30,000 / 22,000 ≈ 1.36 (approx. 2 lights)
- Adjust for Mounting Height
Different UFO high bay lights are designed for different ceiling heights.
Higher ceilings require high bay LED lights with higher lumen outputs or more fixtures to ensure uniform light.
Here are the general guidelines:
- For ceilings 15–20 feet, use 100–150W fixtures.
- For ceilings 20–30 feet, use 150–250W fixtures.
- For ceilings above 30 feet, use 250W+ fixtures.
- Consider Spacing and Beam Angles
Spacing: Fixtures should be at a specific spacing with no dark spots.
- 15–20 feet height: Space UFO high bay LED lights 10–15 feet apart.
- 20–30 feet height: Space UFO high bay LED light lights 15–20 feet apart.
Beam Angle: Choose the best beam angle according to your space. Narrow angles of 60°–90° are better for focused lighting, while wide angles of 120° cover larger areas.
- Account for Reflectance and Obstructions
The highly reflective surfaces like white walls may reduce the number of UFO high bay LED lights needed.
The obstructions, such as shelves or equipment, may require additional UFO high bay LED lights to eliminate shadows.
- Example Calculation
A warehouse of 20m in length, 10m in width, and 6m in height requires a 200 lux light level. Each light produces 20,000 lumens. Calculate the number of light fixtures needed for your space.
Space Dimensions: 20m x 10m x 6m (200 sq. meters).
Purpose: Warehouse requiring 200 lux.
Total Lumens Required: 200×200=40,000
Fixture Output: 20,000 lumens per light.
Number of Fixtures: 40,000 / 20,000 = 2
